Abuja: The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa) on Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, revealed the conferment during a presentation ceremony at Wike’s residence in Abuja. The official awarding of the degree will take place on July 26 as part of UNIPORT’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.
Prof. Georgewill highlighted that the university’s Act empowers it to bestow honorary degrees on distinguished Nigerians who have significantly contributed to national development. Wike’s record in public service and his contributions to both the university and the state of Rivers were cited as reasons for the honor. He emphasized Wike’s status as a noteworthy alumnus and his visible impact on the university.
Mrs. Gloria Chindah, Registrar and Secretary to the Council, communicated the decision in a letter dated June 10. She noted that the Senate decided at an Extra-Ordinary meeting on June 3, 2025, to recognize Wike’s visionary leadership and governance contributions.
Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, praised Wike for being an exemplary university ambassador. He recounted Wike’s achievements, including defending the university during his tenure as Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, and his role in establishing the Faculty of Law during his time as Minister of Education.
Ohuabunwa also mentioned Wike’s contributions as the governor of Rivers, including the construction of a leading Convocation Arena in West Africa and a recent donation of a multimedia center.
In his response, Wike expressed gratitude for the recognition, acknowledging the university’s pivotal role in his life. He recounted his efforts to enhance the university’s facilities and expressed his commitment to continuing support for his alma mater. Wike accepted the honor on behalf of his family and friends and pledged to participate in the university’s golden jubilee celebrations.
