FCCPC Targets Unfair Practices in Abuja Markets with Sensitisation Campaign

Abuja: The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has embarked on a sensitisation campaign across markets in Abuja’s Area Councils to address unfair practices among traders. The initiative aims to foster a culture of fairness and transparency in the marketplace.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the sensitisation efforts took place in the Kwali, Abaji, Kuje, and Gwagwalada markets. Mr. Tunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of FCCPC, highlighted that the campaign is part of the commission’s strategy to engage directly with market participants. Represented by Mrs. Bridget Etim, the Principal Consumer and Business Education Officer, Bello stated that the commission is working to educate traders while fostering collaboration based on mutual understanding and shared responsibility.

The FCCPC is actively investigating and addressing unfair practices such as the re-bagging and mislabelling of food items. These practices involve repackaging expired or substandard goods and falsely marketing them as fresh or reputable brands, which deceives consumers and poses health risks. Bello emphasized that this fraudulent activity undermines honest traders and is particularly prevalent in the sale of staples like rice and other fast-moving consumer goods.

Bello also pointed out concerns over market associations engaging in price fixing, as well as issues with inaccurate measurements and weights. He encouraged traders to report any suspicious activities to the commission, ensuring confidentiality and protection for whistleblowers.

Sani Ibrahim, Chairman of the Market Association in Kwali Area Council, praised the FCCPC for engaging with traders before enforcing regulations. He called for continuous government support and guidance to help traders comply with fair trading practices. Ibrahim expressed gratitude for the government’s involvement, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for the growth and development of market communities.

The News Agency of Nigeria further noted that the FCCPC plans to extend its sensitisation campaign to markets across all states in the country, aiming to create a nationwide culture of fair trade and consumer protection.
