Abuja: The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that troops of Operation Safe Haven successfully rejected a bribe of N13.7 million offered by terrorists during an operation on the Jos-Sanga Road in Plateau. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, revealed this development while addressing journalists on military activities nationwide.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the troops were responding to a distress call regarding terrorist activities when they intercepted two individuals who attempted to bribe them with N13.7 million. The operation also involved offensive actions and responses to distress signals in various localities including Bassa, Barkin Ladi, South Wase, Riyom, and Jos East Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Plateau.
Kangye further detailed that similar operations were conducted in Kaura and Sanga LGAs of Kaduna State, where troops engaged extremists, resulting in several fatalities, the arrest of 12 suspects, and the rescue of three kidnapped victims. Weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, and vehicles were seized during these operations.
Additionally, troops of Operation Safe Haven, while on routine patrol, arrested seven individuals involved in militias and criminal activities in Barkin Ladi and Jos South LGAs of Plateau State, as well as Wamba and Sanga LGAs of Nasarawa and Kaduna States, respectively. Recovered items included weapons, ammunition, motorcycles, and illicit drugs.
On July 9, troops intercepted a vehicle with bullet holes on the Jos-Sanga Road. The suspects attempted to offer monetary gratification to the troops, which was declined. The troops arrested two suspects and confiscated weapons, ammunition, a vehicle, and the sum of N13.7 million from them. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with all recovered items currently in the custody of the military.
Kangye praised the troops for their resilience and professionalism in handling the situation. He urged the public to continue to support security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities. He emphasized the importance of public cooperation and media support for the success of military operations and assured that updates would be provided to ensure transparency.
