NIMC Launches NIN Authentication Service for Enhanced Identity Verification

General

Lagos: The Federal Government has approved the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) inauguration of the NIMC NIN Authentication (NNAuth) for secured and seamless identity verification and authentication. This initiative marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to enhance digital identity management within the country.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, a statement by Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, reveals that the presidency has mandated the use of NIN Authentication for verification and authentication processes across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). This decision aligns with the commission’s mandate to regulate a reliable national digital identity for citizens and legal residents.

Dr. Adegoke elaborated that the NIN Authentication (NINAuth) offers a suite of services including web, API, and mobile verification. These services aim to improve data security, protect privacy, and simplify access to government services. This move is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes strengthening the national identity management system.

The NINAuth application integrates with the commission’s back-end infrastructure, providing an additional layer of protection. It empowers individuals with more control over their personal information by requiring explicit consent before data sharing for Know Your Customer (KYC) processes or other verifications. The platform is designed to foster trust, transparency, and user autonomy in digital identity management.

Dr. Adegoke also highlighted that with the NINAuth, individuals can securely verify their identity and access key government services such as SIM registration, applications, and passport processing. It also covers tax filings, financial transactions, government intervention programs, driver’s license renewals, and other regulatory processes.

The NIMC head of corporate communications emphasized the key features and benefits of the NINAuth, which include enhanced security, personal data protection, and empowering individuals with the ability to manage their data-sharing preferences. The service provides a secure single sign-on solution for convenient access to services, reaffirming NIMC’s commitment to advancing secured and efficient digital identity management.

Additionally, the NINAuth application offers a secure, scalable, and interoperable interface for identity verification through API integration. It is designed to facilitate real-time authentication of NIN records, promoting effective service delivery, database harmonization, and compliance with the National Identity Policy. The NINAuth service is designated as the exclusive platform for all NIN-based verification and authentication integration processes.
