Onitsha: The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and state emergency management agencies in Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu have ramped up preparations to address potential flooding in the region. Despite the efforts, residents remain reluctant to leave their homes.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency have issued warnings about possible flooding in 19 states, urging readiness to avoid disaster. NEMA and state agencies have proactively engaged in public sensitization to mitigate the impact of the floods.
In Anambra, the government has established 16 Holding Centres in flood-prone areas including Ogbaru, Aguleri, and Ifite Ogwari. Chief Paul Odenigbo, Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, expressed concern over residents’ hesitance to evacuate despite the warnings. Efforts are ongoing to reduce the negative impact through collaborations between AnSEMA and NEMA.
Odenigbo highlighted that the state had trained local emergency response volunteers and provided essential facilities in the Holding Centres to accommodate potential evacuees. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, attributing the floods to climate change and poor urban planning.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra advised residents to relocate to safer areas and urged collaboration with local leaders for disaster preparedness. In Ebonyi, similar proactive measures have been implemented, including sensitization campaigns to educate residents on flood mitigation practices.
Mr. Clement Ovuoba, Executive Secretary of the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency, mentioned ongoing awareness efforts and preparedness for the imminent flooding. The agency has identified vulnerable areas and sought government support for relief materials.
NEMA’s Head of Operations in Enugu, Mrs. Ngozi Echeazu, stated that the agency has conducted joint flood preparedness simulations with state agencies to enhance readiness. Measures such as monitoring river levels and distributing warning letters have been implemented to ensure prompt response.
Despite these efforts, the reluctance of residents to evacuate remains a critical challenge. Local authorities continue to stress the importance of proactive steps, including proper waste disposal and maintaining open waterways, to prevent flooding disasters.
