Abuja: President Bola Tinubu announced that the newly constructed bus and taxi terminals by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) will address security concerns in public transportation within the territory. Tinubu made this statement during the inauguration of the Kugbo Bus and Taxi Terminal, an event marking his second year in office.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu was represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who emphasized that the terminals align with the development goals of transit-oriented cities, featuring smart mobility, compact living spaces, and parking management. He reassured the public, stating, “We heard your concerns; we understood your fears and we acted. With your compliance, you will no longer suffer from one chance by the roadside.” Tinubu also highlighted that these terminals, a carefully planned transportation hub, will contribute to job creation, enhance trade, and provide safety and comfort for commuters.
Tinubu explained that since taking office, he has been committed to upholding the constitution and protecting the citizens. In response to security reports highlighting issues such as one-chance robberies, kidnapping, and thuggery in FCT’s public transportation, he directed FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to implement measures to address these concerns. With the new system, vehicles and drivers are registered and identified, reducing risks associated with informal transport. Advanced security measures, including CCTV surveillance, ensure passenger safety.
The president noted that the Kugbo Bus Terminal, along with the Mabushi terminal and another under construction in the Central Business District, will aid in transforming the fortunes of the people through improved connectivity and economic growth. He asserted that prioritizing transportation infrastructure is critical for national progress, as outlined in his “Renewed Hope Agenda” aimed at revitalizing national infrastructure and enhancing Nigerian lives.
Tinubu commended the Wike-led FCT Administration for efficiently utilizing public resources to complete this significant infrastructure project. He also thanked the National Assembly for its support, enabling his administration to fulfill its promises to the citizens. In response, Minister Wike expressed gratitude to Tinubu for endorsing the ongoing transformation in FCT, particularly in public transportation. Wike assured residents that the new terminals provide a secure transport option with known vehicles and drivers, reducing exposure to criminal activities.
Furthermore, Wike mentioned plans to transfer terminal operations to the private sector and expand the network with additional terminals in Gwagwalada, Bwari, and Kuje.
