Thousands Flee Mali as JNIM Blockade Triggers New Wave of Displacement

Accra: Over the past two weeks, thousands of Malians have escaped westward toward the Mauritanian border as an al Qaeda-linked JNIM blockade continues to cut off entire communities. Most who managed to reach Mauritania say they have no intention of returning, citing the relentless violence that has plagued the region since 2012.

According to France24.com, the blockade by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) has severely restricted the movement of goods and people, intensifying the humanitarian crisis. The blockade has resulted in significant shortages of food and essential supplies, forcing many to embark on the perilous journey toward Mauritania in search of safety and resources.

The current wave of displacement is part of a broader pattern of instability that has affected Mali for over a decade. The ongoing conflict has displaced hundreds of thousands of people, many of whom remain in temporary shelters with limited access to basic services. The situation remains precarious, with interna
tional organizations calling for urgent humanitarian assistance to address the needs of those affected.
