Experts Urge Nigerian Health Institutions to Prioritize Quality Care and Patient Safety

Lagos: In a bid to ensure access to quality and affordable care for Nigerians, stakeholders have renewed calls for continuous improvement of quality healthcare services in the country. The stakeholders made the call at a Quality Improvement Seminar organised by the Redeemer’s Health Village (RHV), a faith-based health institution owned by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Prof. Philip Abiodun, Chairman of the National Tertiary Institutions Standard Committee, Federal Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of continuous quality healthcare delivery for the well-being of the populace. As the Chairman of the event themed ‘Continuous Quality Improvement As a Critical Tool in Universal Health Coverage’, Abiodun stressed that all health institutions must strive to enhance their quality of care. He remarked on the necessity of having a healthcare system that consistently improves the quality of healthcare for the nation, urging that hospitals should not merely be built but should also focus on enhancing the quality of care provided to the people.

Abiodun commended the RHV seminar as a significant reminder for all health associations and organizations that quality in health institutions and hospitals should be an ongoing process. He pointed out that the quality of healthcare in tertiary institutions is dependent on the standard of care provided in primary and secondary facilities. Furthermore, he urged the committee responsible for accrediting tertiary health institutions to ensure adherence to continuous quality improvement.

Dr. Kunle Onakoya, Chairman of the Board of the Redeemer’s Health Village, reiterated the necessity for hospitals to provide quality care while being continuously conscious of patient safety. Onakoya noted that the seminar aimed to remind relevant health stakeholders in both public and private sectors to pursue patient satisfaction through quality care. He emphasized that the core function of a hospital must revolve around quality care and patient safety, highlighting that these elements should be integral to hospital operations rather than assumed outcomes.

Earlier, Dr. Adedamola Dada, CEO of RHV, highlighted the institution’s commitment to prioritizing quality and patient safety across all healthcare specialties. Dada, a former Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre Ebute Meta, Lagos, mentioned that the seminar aimed to integrate the hospital into the healthcare delivery system in Ogun. He detailed the hospital’s facilities, including a 16-bed Intensive Care Unit, five fully-equipped Theatre Suites for surgical procedures, and an MRI with the largest bore for patients, over 200jg, in West Africa. Dada, an Orthopaedic Surgeon, encouraged residents of Ogun, Lagos, and surrounding states to leverage the world-class health institution for quality and affordable care.
