C’River Partners with AHF to Distribute Sanitary Pads in Underserved Communities

Calabar: The Government of Cross River State has announced a partnership with the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) to distribute sanitary pads to women and girls in underserved communities across the state. This initiative was revealed by Mrs. Edema Irom, Commissioner for Women Affairs, during an engagement with four secondary schools in Cross River to mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event included the distribution of sanitary pads to students from West African Peoples’ Institute, Government Secondary School Lagos Street, Calabar, Henshaw Town Secondary School, and Government Secondary School Akim by AHF. Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28, focuses on breaking taboos, ensuring access to quality menstrual products, and promoting comprehensive period education. The theme for the 2025 observance is ‘Together for a Period-Friendly World.’

Mrs. Irom urged line Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), civil society organisations, and communities to ensure sanitary pads are accessible in public places. She highlighted ongoing challenges such as the provision of pads, access to water, and proper toilet facilities in schools. She noted that some women approach the ministry for pads, while some girls resort to exchanging sex for money to purchase sanitary products.

Mr. Steve Aborishade, Advocacy Manager of AHF, emphasized that menstruation encompasses more than hygiene, highlighting the need for a conducive environment for girls to manage their periods. He addressed issues like lack of access to sanitary products, water, and the stigma surrounding menstruation, advocating for a society where menstruation is normalized.

Mrs. Gertrude Egbole, Principal of West African Peoples’ Institute, represented by Mrs. Ofem Okoi, expressed gratitude to AHF for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of addressing menstruation at the school. Miss Destiny Udoaka, a student from Henshaw Town Secondary School, shared her appreciation for receiving sanitary pads and praised the inclusion of boys in the engagement, which helped demystify menstruation.

The News Agency of Nigeria also reports that the AHF menstrual hygiene programme is being implemented in Abuja and Benue State.
