Autistic Artist Calls for Support Fund for Special Needs Individuals

Abuja: Multi-talented autistic artist, Tobechi Achionye, widely known as Toby, has made a passionate appeal for the establishment of a support fund aimed at promoting inclusive education, therapy, creative empowerment, and awareness programs for individuals with special needs. This announcement was made during a global news conference in Abuja to mark the 2025 Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Achionye used the occasion to unveil his humanitarian initiative, ‘Be Kind by Toby: Kindness for All Abilities,’ and to campaign for his two books focused on autism awareness and inclusive values in educational and home settings. Achionye urged governments, Nigerians of goodwill, corporate entities, and civil society groups to prioritize the needs of autistic children and support the ‘Be Kind for All Abilities Support Fund.’

Achionye emphasized that such a national initiative would facilitate inclusive education, therapy, creative empowerment, and awareness programs for people with diverse abilities. He highlighted the importance of ensuring every child has the opportunity to fully participate in society and reach their potential, regardless of their background or circumstances.

In support of Achionye’s initiative, Sen. Frank Ibezim, former representative of Imo North Senatorial District in the 9th Senate, praised Achionye’s courage and innovation in redefining perceptions of autism. Ibezim noted that Achionye’s work in art, music, fashion, and literature aims to educate and inspire a world that embraces neurodiversity.

Diagnosed with autism at the age of four, Achionye overcame early challenges, including being non-verbal and struggling with communication and behavior. Through unwavering parental support, he transformed these challenges into strengths, emerging as an accomplished artist, musician, and advocate for inclusion. Notably, he was recognized as the second runner-up in Autism’s Got Talent in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mrs. Noni Okocha, founder of ‘I Am the Future of Nigeria Youth Initiative,’ called for support for Achionye and commended his inspiration behind her two books, ‘Understanding Autism: Toby’s Journey’ and ‘Be Kind: A Story of Acceptance and Inclusion.’ Okocha emphasized the importance of embracing differences, seeing beyond labels, and fostering kindness.

The event also featured the introduction of Achionye’s signature T-shirt collection, inspired by the emotions and experiences of autistic individuals, transforming fashion into a medium for advocacy. In appreciation, Achionye presented hand-drawn replicas of logos to attending media, showcasing his artistic talent and gratitude.

The event’s highlight was the release of two hit songs by the multi-talented artist, further demonstrating his creative prowess.
