Lagos: The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has called on engineers to remain committed to excellence and innovation to drive economic and social development. The President of NSE, Mrs. Margaret Oguntala, emphasized this in a statement to commemorate the 2025 World Engineering Day (WED) for Sustainable Development, celebrated annually on March 4.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the day is recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation as a recognition of engineers and engineering as essential pillars of sustainable development. This year’s global theme by the World Federation of Engineering Organisations is ‘Shaping Our Sustainable Future Through Engineering’.
Oguntala highlighted the global expectation for innovative solutions from engineers and urged them to persist in demonstrating resilience, ingenuity, and the spirit of excellence. She encouraged reaffirmation of the resolve to utilize engineering for sustainable development and improvement of lives.
Oguntala commended Nigerian engineers, both domestically and abroad, for their steadfast dedication and contributions to national and global development. She noted their pivotal role in sustainable solutions, including climate change mitigation, clean energy development, water management, infrastructure resilience, and digital transformation.
She acknowledged the collaboration between engineers, policymakers, scientists, and industry leaders, stressing the importance of continued cooperation to drive progress and economic development. Oguntala expressed gratitude towards policymakers, leading scientists, industry leaders, and stakeholders for their collaborative efforts with Nigerian engineers over the years, which have been instrumental in ensuring engineering remains a driving force for development.
Oguntala expressed optimism that joint efforts will lead to significant transformation in advancing the economy and shaping a sustainable future for Nigeria through engineering. She emphasized that continued cooperation and support from all stakeholders with Nigerian engineers are crucial for effectively tackling the challenges of infrastructure development and maintenance across the country.
