Tinubu Rewards D’Tigress with $100,000 and Flats for Historic Victory

Abuja: President Bola Tinubu announced a significant reward for each member of the victorious national female basketball team, D’Tigress, by gifting them $100,000 and a flat. This announcement was made during a reception held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Vice-President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the President commended the team for their remarkable achievement and honored them with National Honours. He also announced a $50,000 reward for the coach and technical team, highlighting the administration’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellence. Tinubu emphasized the role of sports in uniting the nation and the valuable lessons the team’s victory brought to all Nigerians.

President Tinubu praised D’Tigress for their tactical skills, determination, and resilience, which led them to become continental champions and qualify for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup pre-qualifying tournament. He acknowledged the team’s role as ambassadors of the nation and their ability to inspire national pride.

In his speech, Tinubu lauded Coach Rena Wakama for her leadership and Amy Okonkwo and Ezinne Kalu for their exceptional performances. He recognized Nigerian women as a source of pride in sports, from football to track and field, and now in basketball. He announced plans to reposition sports as a key pillar for national development and economic growth.

Tinubu expressed gratitude towards the National Sports Commission for focusing on athlete welfare and the Nigerian Basketball Federation for their dedication to the sport.
