Abuja: President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday extended his congratulations to Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, on the occasion of his 50th birthday. In his statement, the President acknowledged Oyedele’s significant contributions to fiscal policy and tax reforms in Nigeria.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu praised Oyedele for his exemplary journey from modest beginnings in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, to achieving academic and professional excellence at prestigious institutions like the London School of Economics, Yale University, and Harvard Kennedy School. The President highlighted Oyedele’s demonstration of merit, discipline, and integrity as the cornerstones of his accomplishments.
Tinubu recalled the establishment of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms on August 8, 2023, under Oyedele’s leadership, with the mandate to transform Nigeria’s tax and fiscal landscape. The President set ambitious targets for the committee, including raising the tax-to-GDP ratio to 18% within three years and enhancing the business environment. While awaiting the harmonized tax bills for assent, Tinubu noted positive signs of progress, with the current tax-to-GDP ratio rising from 10% to over 13.5%.
The President commended Oyedele’s pivotal role as a former Africa Tax Leader at PwC in advocating for a fairer, simpler, and growth-oriented tax system. Oyedele’s efforts to streamline taxation, provide relief for low-income households, and promote inclusive economic growth were also lauded.
As Oyedele celebrates his 50th birthday, Tinubu expressed anticipation for his ongoing contributions to academia and youth empowerment initiatives. The President also offered prayers for Oyedele’s continued strength, wisdom, and fulfillment in his service to Nigeria and humanity.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Oyedele, born on June 18, 1975, in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, was appointed Chairman of Tinubu’s Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms on August 8, 2023. He has been at the forefront of efforts to revamp Nigeria’s tax system.
