Tinubu Inaugurates 27km Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road, Flags Off Key Highway Projects

Lagos: President Bola Tinubu on Thursday inaugurated the completed 27km dual reinforced concrete Deep Sea Port Access Route at Lekki, Lagos State. The President also virtually inaugurated other road projects across Nigeria and flagged off the construction of sections of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway and Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu described the Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Route as a landmark project during the inauguration ceremony in Lagos. He highlighted the significance of the infrastructure projects for Nigeria, stating that his administration is committed to delivering enduring infrastructure across the nation. The President also addressed misconceptions about the projects, clarifying that they are being procured, awarded, and constructed in sections.

The Federal Executive Council approved these legacy projects, including the 30km segment of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, which Tinubu inaugurated on May 31 as part of the 47.7km six-lane Section One, Phase One, of the project. Tinubu emphasized that no contractor has been awarded the entire corridor, and the administration’s approach has been systematic, transparent, and section-based.

The Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, envisioned 47 years ago under the Shagari administration, is another legacy project that has been revived. This corridor spans Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos, and holds potential for agriculture, trade, and industrialization. Tinubu noted that his administration had completed over 10km of the 258km three-lane carriageway in Kebbi and work had begun on a 120km single-carriageway in Sokoto.

In his remarks, the Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, stated that the Deep Sea Port Access Route would serve deep sea ports, addressing previous challenges with port access. He presented six completed projects in northern Nigeria, including the 38km Yakasai to Zaria Road and the 82km Kwana to Hadejia Road in Kano. Umahi also mentioned the ongoing design of a 61km link-up on the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, expressing hope for the realization of Tinubu’s vision for Lagos State and the country.
