Lagos: The National Union of Textile, Garment, and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has called on the government at all levels to implement the Executive Order 003. NUTGTWN President, Mr. Peter Godonu, made the call in an interview, emphasizing the need for government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to source their fabrics for uniforms locally instead of importing them.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Executive Order 003 is not being enforced, resulting in government bodies failing to patronize locally produced uniforms. This lack of enforcement is seen as a significant hindrance to the revival and survival of the textile industry in Nigeria.
Godonu highlighted that the policy, signed during Buhari’s regime, mandates that all government entities source uniforms internally. He pointed out that many ministries and agencies continue to import uniforms, which contradicts the goal of reviving the textile industry.
He explained that the market for textiles is vast, considering the needs of government parastatals, ministries, agencies, and schools. However, the government’s current practice of sourcing uniforms externally poses a challenge to growing local factories and the entire textile sector.
