Abuja: The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Energy Ministers Meeting and supporting activities will be held on June 26 and 27 in Ningbo, Zhejiang. Ningbo’s green practice will provide a ‘China’s Solution’ for the global energy transformation.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the meeting, a top-level side event of this year’s SCO Summit, is among the largest diplomatic gatherings hosted by China’s energy sector in 2025. With a theme of ‘Integrate Innovation for Energy Future’, the event aims to leverage China’s SCO rotating presidency to build consensus among stakeholders and enhance energy cooperation within the SCO framework. Attendees include the SCO Secretariat, energy regulators from member, observer, and dialogue partner states, as well as major international organizations, energy enterprises, think tanks, and universities. The opening ceremony will feature the official release of the China-SCO Renewable Energy Cooperation Report 2024, followed by forums on technological, industrial, and policy innovation to address energy transformation and sustainable development.
Ningbo, a leading port city with an annual cargo throughput exceeding 1.3 billion tons, has embraced new energy practices. As a traditional manufacturing hub, it focuses on developing a resilient power system and a full-chain new energy vehicle industry. The city has implemented projects like Zhejiang’s integrated demonstration project, which combines distributed wind power, photovoltaic (PV) systems, energy storage, and microgrids at Ningbo Zhoushan Port. Since January 2024, the project’s cumulative generation has surpassed 40 million kWh, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 24,000 tons. Just five days of full-power operation of two 6.25-megawatt wind generators can meet the monthly electricity demand of 169 gantry cranes in the port.
At Zeekr’s intelligent factory in Meishan, robotic arms are used to precisely weld car bodies, producing a pure electric car every 110 seconds. By establishing a complete industrial chain for new energy vehicles, Ningbo has developed a 100-billion yuan industrial ecosystem.
Additionally, 362 households in Li’ao village of Haishu district have installed rooftop PV facilities, generating about 600,000 kWh annually and providing villagers with approximately 500,000 yuan in yearly income. The Ningbo Industrial Internet Institute has fostered and incubated 46 high-tech companies, attracting numerous high-tech talents.
Established in 2001, the SCO has grown from six founding members to a ‘big family’ with 10 member states, 2 observer states, and 14 dialogue partners, making it the world’s largest and most populous regional cooperation body. The designation of 2025 as the ‘SCO Year of Sustainable Development’ highlights its expansion.
