Lagos: The National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF) has restated its commitment to players’ welfare and football safety in honour of Samuel Okwaraji. NANPF President, Mr. Sunday Abe, made this announcement during a memorial event commemorating the 36th anniversary of Okwaraji’s death.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Abe emphasized that the late midfielder’s sacrifice is a constant reminder of the urgent need for safety reforms in Nigerian football. He stated, “Samuel Okwaraji made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country. His memory reminds us why footballers’ health and safety must be top priority. Beyond tributes, we are taking action by improving conditions for players at all levels.”
Abe also revisited NANPF’s previous efforts in 2015 and 2016, where they organized two editions of the Sam Okwaraji U-15 Tournament and lectures in Owerri. However, the initiative faced setbacks due to internal family-related challenges, which hindered its continuity. He mentioned that the association is currently reviewing the program and may consider restarting it in 2026.
The president further highlighted that NANPF has been collaborating with stakeholders to enhance health screening, emergency response, and insurance for players. He stressed that player welfare is a right, not a privilege, and underscored the importance of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
Okwaraji’s untimely death occurred on August 12, 1989, at the age of 25 during a FIFA World Cup qualifier between Nigeria and Angola in Lagos. His passing shocked the nation and brought to light the inadequate on-field medical support available at that time.
Abe urged Nigerian football authorities to invest more in match-day medical infrastructure and ensure the presence of qualified personnel to safeguard players’ health and safety during games.
