Rivers Angels and Kwara United Clinch 2025 President Federation Cup Titles

Lagos: Rivers Angels FC of Port Harcourt secured their 10th consecutive Women’s President Federation Cup title after a 6-4 penalty victory over Nasarawa Amazons. The match, held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan Lagos Island, saw Rivers Angels overturn a two-goal deficit to maintain their dominant streak.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Amazons opened the scoring with two goals from Olushola Shobawale in the 7th and 17th minutes, concluding the first half with a lead. However, Rivers Angels responded with vigor in the second half. Taiwo Ajibade scored in the 57th minute, followed by an equalizer from Afolabi five minutes later, leading to a penalty shootout where Rivers Angels triumphed.

Amazons’ Shobawale expressed her disappointment but remained optimistic about future opportunities. Meanwhile, Afolabi of Rivers Angels was elated with the victory and credited the team’s hard work for the win.

In the men’s category, Kwara United emerged victorious against Abakaliki FC, winning 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regular time. Despite missing their first penalty, Kwara United converted the remaining attempts to clinch the title.

Victor Adeoye of Kwara United, who was named the Most Valuable Player, attributed the victory to the team’s dedication and the support from the state government. He emphasized the significance of winning a trophy after 49 years and acknowledged the role of the state governor in their success.

The 2025 President Federation Cup was graced by notable figures including former Super Eagles players Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba, as well as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, and Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission. The event also saw the presence of Bukola Olapade, Director-General of the NSC.
