Para-Badminton: Call for More Competitions to Maintain Athlete Fitness, Says Orbih

Abuja: Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, emphasized the need for the federation to organize more competitions to maintain the fitness of athletes in preparation for international championships. Orbih expressed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, highlighting the importance of nurturing talents like Olympic bronze medallist Eniola Bolaji to achieve remarkable records on the international stage.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Bolaji’s achievements include securing a bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, France, winning gold at the Egypt Para Badminton International in January, and another gold in March at the 2025 Spanish Para Badminton International in Vitoria. The president noted that the recently concluded 5th edition of the para-badminton open championship in Umuahia, Abia, showcased a range of skilled athletes and underscored the growth of para-sports in Nigeria.

Orbih noted that 14 states participated in the championship, all performing admirably. He mentioned that the federation identified several athletes who will be nurtured for future international competitions to bring pride to the country. The president also praised Governor Alex Otti of Abia for his substantial support, financially and otherwise, which was instrumental in hosting the event and encouraging young athletes.

The championship, held from July 14 to 17 in Umuahia, Abia, saw the host state emerge as the overall winner with 17 medals, including 5 golds. Plateau followed with 8 medals, while Ogun and Kwara secured third and fourth places, respectively. Imo rounded out the top five with a total of 9 medals.

NAN also reported that the inaugural Abia Para Badminton International Championship is set for September 30 to October 5, followed by the All Africa Para Badminton Championship from October 6 to 12 in Abia.
