Oyo Muslim Group Disburses N6.5 Million Zakat to Underprivileged

Ibadan: Some Muslim professionals and businessmen in Oyo State, operating under the auspices of The Companion, have disbursed N6.5 million as Zakat to underprivileged Muslims in Ibadan. Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, mandates wealthy Muslims to allocate a portion of their wealth annually to aid the poor.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Amir of the Oyo District group, Alhaji Nurain Zakariyah, highlighted that this initiative aims to support needy Muslims. Zakariyah explained that the association, which has branches in Abuja, Oyo, Kwara, Osun, Lagos, and Cross River, was formed to promote Islam, with Zakat distribution being one of its key objectives. The distribution of Zakat was carried out simultaneously across all branches, with a total of N114 million allocated for this purpose.

In Oyo State, N6.5 million was specifically distributed among the less privileged, with beneficiaries receiving amounts between N100,000 and N300,000. This marks the fifth edition of the event, which has significantly impacted the lives of many beneficiaries. Zakariyah encouraged wealthy Muslims to fulfill their Zakat obligations to help alleviate poverty within the Muslim community.

Alhaji Abdulwakeel Olaniyi, Chairman of the Organising Committee, stated that out of 77 applications received, 48 were approved for Zakat distribution. The beneficiaries included 29 females and 19 males. Dr Mubasir Yusuf, the association’s Missioner, emphasized the religious obligation of paying Zakat and noted that neglecting it often stems from weak faith and ignorance. He stressed that proper adherence to Zakat could purify wealth and alleviate societal hardship.

Dr Bashir Olanrewaju, the former Amir of the association, urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, with the hope that they might become future Zakat givers. Recipients Mr. Kazeem Akindele and Mrs. Taiwo Badmus expressed gratitude toward the association for their support and pledged to use the funds effectively.
