Lagos: The Nigerian Bar Association – Young Lawyers Forum (NBA-YLF) has urged the Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners Association of Nigeria (BRIPAN) to foster stronger collaboration. The forum emphasized that such cooperation would enhance youth inclusion and increase participation in Nigeria’s insolvency practice landscape.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, NBA-YLF Chairman, Mr Timothy Clement, made the appeal during a courtesy visit to BRIPAN President, Mr Chimezie Ihekweazu (SAN). Clement highlighted the growing interest among young lawyers in insolvency and business recovery, requesting training concessions to boost their engagement. He noted the significant reforms brought about by the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020, which introduced flexible mechanisms for business recovery and restructuring, allowing viable businesses to remain operational instead of shutting down.
Clement pointed out that the shift from liquidation to restructuring would reduce litigation, preserve econo
mic value, and sustain employment across the country. He added that young lawyers needed access to professional training and support to understand insolvency principles and contribute to national recovery efforts.
Responding, BRIPAN President Ihekweazu appreciated the visit and emphasized the importance of professional standards in insolvency practice. He highlighted that CAMA 2020 prioritizes professionalism and offers flexible options like company administration and voluntary arrangements instead of liquidation. Ihekweazu mentioned that the Act empowers licensed practitioners to manage distressed firms towards recovery, encouraging sustainability and continuity.
He added that BRIPAN would consider inclusive membership concessions in line with its goal of boosting business survival rates in Nigeria. Ihekweazu urged young lawyers to invest in building capacity and expanding their practice areas for long-term benefits.
