Bauchi: The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Bauchi State Chapter, has taken a bold step toward strengthening male involvement in maternal and child health. It created a platform for men to engage, address, and debunk myths surrounding early initiation of breast milk and exclusive breastfeeding.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event, held on Wednesday at the Miri Primary Health Care Centre in Bauchi, was organised in collaboration with the AIM/MNCH Project. It was also supported by the MWAN National MCH Committee, as part of activities marking the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week.
In her remarks, Dr Umma-Hani Jafaru, President of MWAN Bauchi Chapter, emphasised the importance of prioritising breastfeeding and reinforcing support systems for nursing mothers. She explained that early initiation of breastfeeding, ideally within 30 minutes of delivery, was crucial, and highlighted the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months.
Dr Jafaru noted that these benefits include a reduced risk of postpartum hemorrhage, natural birth spacing, and a lower risk of breast cancer. She stated, “Breast milk alone provides all the nutrients a baby needs for healthy growth and development.”
She also encouraged women to adopt exclusive breastfeeding and called on husbands to offer emotional and practical support to their partners during the breastfeeding period. The event also featured health education sessions for pregnant women during antenatal care visits.
