Multigenerational Boards Enhance Innovation and Corporate Governance, Says Expert

Lagos: Mr Kayode Falowo, Chairman of Greenwich Merchant Bank, has highlighted the critical importance of multigenerational board composition in organisations to enhance innovation, support stronger corporate governance, and drive resilience. He made these remarks at the Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria (CIoD) 2025 Fellows’ Luncheon held in Lagos.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event centered around the theme ‘Multigenerational Leadership: Bridging the Gap for a Stronger Board’, emphasizing the strengths and different experiences brought by baby boomers, generation X, millennials, and generation Z to today’s boardrooms. Falowo noted that age-diverse boards tend to outperform their peers by five to 10 percent in returns, suggesting that organisations should conduct board composition audits and adopt mentorship programs for emerging leaders.

Falowo underscored the competitive advantage of generational continuity, which preserves knowledge and stability, builds stronger stakeholder trust, and sustains growth. He outlined a 180-day action plan to ensure multigenerational continuity of boards, beginning with a comprehensive analysis of board generational composition and succession vulnerability, followed by developing a target generational composition model and launching knowledge preservation initiatives.

In his remarks, CIoD President Alhaji Tijjani Borodo stated that the event’s theme underscores the strategic imperative for future leadership in a rapidly transforming world. He highlighted that leadership has become fluid, evolving with economic, technological, and societal changes, and boards must reflect this reality with intention and inclusiveness.

Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed, Chairman of the Fellows and Awards Committee at CIoD, noted that the luncheon acknowledged the exceptional achievements of fellows and that their dedication to good governance serves as a guiding light for the business community. He emphasized that modern boardrooms must actively cultivate environments where diverse viewpoints are integrated to create a more effective leadership structure.
