Ministry Urges Women to Prioritise Safety in Homes and Public Spaces

Lagos: The Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has called on women to cultivate a culture of safety both at home and in public spaces. Mrs. Bolaji Dada, the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, emphasized the importance of safety consciousness during a workshop in Agege, stating it is crucial for preventing harm.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the workshop titled ‘Homes and Public Places Safety: An Essential Way of Life’ was organized by WAPA to raise safety awareness among women-focused NGOs. Dada pointed out that ensuring a safe home environment is not solely about its inhabitants but also how well it is managed and protected. She further noted that public safety extends beyond mere police presence.

“This theme is timely in our fast-paced and urbanizing society like Lagos, where movement, interaction, and daily living occur in various spaces,” Dada stated. She highlighted that safety is essential for individuals of all ages, whether at home, work, school, parks, or on public transport. She underscored that safety is a cultural practice developed through awareness, civic responsibility, infrastructure planning, and respect for public order. Dada remarked on the workshop’s significance, not just for the ideas shared but for the partnerships it fosters.

Mrs. Oluwatosin Sogbola, Director of Safety Training and Sensitisation at the Lagos State Safety Commission and a resource person at the workshop, stressed the ongoing need for safety awareness among women. She reiterated that safety is an ongoing learning process. Sogbola highlighted the significant safety concerns for women and children in the country, urging women to remain vigilant about their safety and that of public spaces. She advocated for enlightening children on protective safety measures at home, school, and public areas.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the workshop concluded with a fire drill demonstration to educate participants on preventing fire outbreaks at home and responding effectively during such incidents to protect lives.
