Abuja: Officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces have emphasized the need for continuous collaboration between the military and the media to ensure peace and security across Nigeria. They made this call during the inaugural Press Week organized by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)-NUJ Headquarters Chapel in Abuja, which focused on the theme ‘The Place of the Media in Shaping and Sustaining National Value.’
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, commended journalists for their critical role in highlighting the efforts of the military. Anele, represented by Maj. Akinola Ajibola, expressed gratitude for the media’s support, acknowledging that the army’s work often goes unpublicized due to its private nature. She emphasized the importance of media in ensuring national peace, urging journalists to maintain discretion in their reporting to aid the country’s progress.
Anele recounted the challenging times in Maiduguri in 2016, highlighting the severe impact of insurgency and the military’s efforts to restore normalcy. She stressed the necessity of combating insurgency and the need for journalists to portray military efforts positively. Anele also explained that delays in releasing information are due to the need for clarity and approval, asking journalists for understanding and continued support.
Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, also addressed the gathering, represented by Sqn.-Ldr Olayinka Lawal. Ejodame praised NAN for organizing the event and described journalists as essential partners. He outlined how the Air Force’s fight against insurgency is divided into kinetic and non-kinetic efforts, with the latter requiring substantial public support. Ejodame urged Nigerians to contribute to ending insurgency, highlighting the importance of public collaboration and understanding.
Ejodame emphasized the human aspect of military personnel, noting that the Nigerian Air Force has made efforts to connect with civilians by opening its bases and barracks. He highlighted the personal sacrifices made by soldiers and urged the public to support the armed forces with intelligence and prayers.
Yusuf Yakub, Director-General of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC), also commended NAN for its dedication to responsible journalism and fostering national dialogue. Represented by Mrs. Olubunmi Ojo, Yakub acknowledged the media’s role as a partner in promoting Nigeria’s soft power diplomacy and enhancing the country’s image globally through truthful storytelling and civic engagement.
Mr. Mufutau Ojo, Editor-in-Chief of NAN, lauded the agency for organizing the press week and thanked the dignitaries for their participation, marking the event as a significant achievement.
