Lagos State Achieves Over Two Million Passengers on Blue Line Rail

Lagos: The Lagos State Government has reported that more than two million passengers have utilized the Blue Line Rail since its inauguration, with state-run buses transporting an average of 42,000 commuters daily. The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this announcement during the Year 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the briefing marked the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, highlighting significant progress in the transport sector under the THEMES+ agenda. Mr. Osiyemi emphasized that the Lagos State Transport Policy, initiated in May 2024, is currently in the implementation phase, which prioritizes inclusivity, safety, affordability, and sustainability.

The commissioner noted that Phase One of the Blue Line, covering Marina to Mile 2, has successfully served over two million passengers, with Phase Two, extending to Okokomaiko, underway. He also mentioned that Phase One of the Red Line, running from Agbado to Oyingbo, is operational with eight stations, and Phase Two, which will link the Blue Line at the National Theatre, is in progress.

Mr. Osiyemi reported that the state-owned bus services have catered to over 60 million commuters since 2019, with daily ridership surpassing 40,000. Plans are in place to deploy new buses as Quality Bus Corridors are constructed, and the Abule-Egba Bus Terminal has been commissioned.

In water transport, 15 locally-built Omibus Ferries are operational, and the Ijegun Egba Terminal is open. The OMI EKO project, in partnership with the French Development Agency, aims to deliver 25 terminals and 78 electric ferries. Over 280,000 passengers have utilized ferry services in the past year, and 12 boats have been upgraded to meet safety standards.

Regarding road infrastructure and traffic management, 49 junction improvement projects have been completed, with ongoing projects at Ikorodu, Iju, and the Allen-Opebi-Toyin axis. The commissioner added that solar-powered Traffic Signal Lights, road markings covering 67.9km, new medians, laybys, and 3,941 parking lots have been provided.

Additionally, Mr. Osiyemi announced that Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras have detected over 470,000 traffic violations, and the Vehicle Inspection Service has issued over one million roadworthiness certificates. The Lagos State Drivers’ Institute has trained more than 32,000 drivers in the past 13 months. Furthermore, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has trained over 800 personnel, evacuated over 100 broken-down vehicles, and revived its school safety advocacy program in 59 schools.
