Keyamo Stresses Financial Discipline for Sustainable Aviation Growth

Lagos: The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, emphasized the importance of synergy between aviation and financial discipline for the sustainable growth of the industry. This statement was made during the inauguration and investiture of the Aviation Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), held in Lagos.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the minister was represented by Mr. Henry Agbebire, the Director of Special Duties at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria. Keyamo highlighted that the initiative aligns with the reform agenda in the aviation sector by promoting professional excellence, strategic collaboration, and ethical standards. He expressed his belief that the newly established ICAN Aviation Chapter could act as a catalyst for promoting financial discipline and sustainable development throughout the aviation value chain.

Keyamo stated that the connection between aviation and finance is crucial, and sound financial management is essential for progress, from infrastructure development to operational sustainability. He expressed confidence that the chapter’s programs, advocacy, and thought leadership would bridge the gap between technical operations and financial stewardship. The minister also commended the pioneer chairman, Mr. Ayodele Olatiregun, and his team for their vision and dedication, assuring them of the ministry’s support.

Guest speaker Mr. Nelson Wilbert delivered the keynote address on the theme “Flightpath to Financial Excellence: Integrating Strategy, Systems, and Standards,” emphasizing the importance of a mission-driven approach to achieving financial excellence in aviation. Wilbert discussed the need for a deliberate and well-coordinated path guided by strategy, systems, and standards. He highlighted the importance of aligning financial strategy and decisions with broader institutional objectives, focusing on capital efficiency, demand-driven investments, and a performance culture.

Wilbert stressed that financial excellence requires strong leadership, cross-functional collaboration, regular evaluation, and a commitment to excellence. He described the ICAN Aviation Chapter as a coalition of changemakers, emphasizing the role of chartered accountants as stewards of financial integrity.

Chief Davidson Alaribe, the Diamond President of ICAN, urged the pioneer chairman to prioritize member training and professional development. He noted the significant impact of aviation on the country’s Gross Domestic Product and the role of chartered accountants in facilitating credit and job creation. Alaribe assured the ICAN Council’s support for the new chapter’s activities and programs, especially in training initiatives.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Ayodele Olatiregun outlined the chapter’s foundation on professional excellence, strategic collaboration, and sustainable systems. He emphasized the need for financial strategies to align with operational goals, infrastructure development, safety, and sustainability. Olatiregun announced key initiatives, including Elevate for the Skies and the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria, highlighting the need for proactive adaptation in the rapidly evolving aviation industry.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that new executives were inaugurated during the event, attended by members of the Ikeja Chapter, representatives from other regions, and personnel from various aviation agencies.
