Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed Advocates for Enhanced Role of OIC in Global Affairs

Jeddah: Following his appointment as Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed emphasizes the importance of strengthening the organization's presence and influence. According to Union of OIC News Agencies, the new Secretary General, Mr. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, highlighted that the OIC serves as the comprehensive framework for joint Islamic action, stressing the necessity of fortifying its presence amidst the rapid transformations occurring globally. His remarks were delivered during the extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers at the General Secretariat headquarters in Jeddah, where he succeeded Mr. Hussein Ibrahim Taha. Mr. Ahmed expressed gratitude for the trust bestowed upon him by the member states, acknowledging the responsibility towards nearly two billion Muslims who anticipate a more impactful and capable organization. He extended thanks to the Mauritanian leadership, including President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, for their su pport in his nomination, and to Saudi Arabia for its backing of the OIC's mission. In acknowledging the contributions of his predecessor, Mr. Hussein Ibrahim Taha, Mr. Ahmed emphasized the importance of building upon past achievements to expand the organization's horizons. He underscored the unique position of the OIC as the second-largest international organization, highlighting its role in promoting Islamic civilization's contributions to global progress. Mr. Ahmed pointed out the significant demographic and resource-based strengths of the member states, which span four continents. These assets, he noted, present both responsibilities and opportunities for the OIC to enhance its global influence amid shifting power dynamics and technological advancements. He reaffirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause to the OIC's mission, committing to support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He pledged to intensify political and diplomatic efforts to suppo rt Palestinian rights and mobilize international support for a just peace. Addressing the challenges of Islamophobia and hate speech, Mr. Ahmed emphasized the importance of promoting dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect, while strengthening partnerships to reflect the true image of Islam. He also stressed the need for the OIC to be more involved in regional and international issues, developing mechanisms for joint action among member states. In his vision for the future, Mr. Ahmed prioritized investing in the youth, equipping them with knowledge and technology to build a prosperous future. He concluded by emphasizing that his role as Secretary General is a duty towards the Islamic nation, calling for unity and solidarity in service of development and peace.
