Awka: The Nzuko Odinani Welfare Association, a body of traditionalists based in Anambra, has made a commitment to expose traditional medicine practitioners who are allegedly involved in preparing charms for criminals and engaging in other unlawful traditional and cultural practices. This pledge is part of the association’s efforts to enhance security in the region.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the association also expressed its readiness to support security agencies in identifying and removing those within the traditional medicine community who are contributing to insecurity. The group’s Chairman, Dikeato Izuegbu, made these remarks during a courtesy call on the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikioye Orutugu.
Izuegbu lauded the police commissioner for his dedication to engaging with the community. In a statement released to newsmen in Awka, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, noted that the group visited the command on Wednesday.
Ikenga quoted Commissioner Orutugu as stating that the police would collaborate with the association to address social issues related to traditional and cultural practices and law enforcement. The police chief emphasized the importance of promoting mutual understanding and respect between law enforcement and traditional practices to improve security in the state.
Orutugu highlighted that understanding and respecting local customs and traditions are crucial for building trust and facilitating effective policing in Anambra. The synergy between the command and the association is aimed at safeguarding lives and property through enhanced cooperation.
