Asaba: Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, on Thursday in Asaba, described workers as the backbone of government’s wheel of progress. The governor made the commendation during the 2025 Workers’ Day celebration.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the governor, represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, emphasized that Workers’ Day should not only be a celebration but also a moment to reflect on the shared journey and renew commitment to building a state and nation where every worker is valued, empowered, and rewarded. Oborevwori highlighted this year’s theme, ‘Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,’ as a powerful call to action and a rallying point for all.
The governor urged workers to remain committed to excellence and to work together with unity and purpose to achieve their dreams for Delta. He also called on Nigerians to appreciate and celebrate the hardworking individuals in various sectors on this Workers’ Day. Oborevwori acknowledged the significant role of workers in the state’s progress and pledged that his administration would continue to advocate for policies that uplift workers and their families.
Oborevwori also addressed the challenges faced by the people, including global economic pressures, rising living costs, and unemployment. He assured the citizens that his administration is working diligently to alleviate these challenges that impact workers and all residents in the state. The governor cited his administration’s efforts under the M.O.R.E. Agenda, which prioritize workers’ welfare through prompt salary and pension payments, clearing of pension backlogs, and the introduction of training programs to enhance skills.
Further, the governor noted improvements in workplaces, healthcare centers, and schools as part of the administration’s commitment to supporting workers. He reiterated that the government’s policy thrust is focused on protecting workers and ensuring governance that is fair and accountable. Oborevwori urged the workers to continue marching forward, united, toward a brighter and more prosperous future.
Earlier in the event, Delta State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, and Comrade Martins Bolum, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), encouraged workers to unite and reclaim their civic space despite the economic hardships. They emphasized that these challenges have tested the resilience and resolve of the workers.
