Lafia: The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) has announced a partnership with the Sugarcane Technologists Society of Nigeria (STSN) to promote research and increase sugarcane production in Nigeria. Prof. Shehu Abdul-Rahman, the Vice Chancellor of FULafia, made this statement at the commencement of STSN’s second International Conference held at the university in Lafia, Nasarawa State. Represented by Prof. Aleruchi Chuku, Provost of the College of Health and Sciences, Abdul-Rahman emphasized the institution’s dedication to advancing agricultural research, particularly in sugarcane farming, to enhance production outcomes.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the research findings from this collaboration are intended to be implemented initially at the Dangote Sugar Refinery located in Tunga, Awe Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. This implementation aims to demonstrate the research’s significance in improving sugarcane yield. Abdul-Rahman expressed appreciation to the STSN for hosting the conference at the university, highlighting it as a valuable platform for exchanging ideas to enhance the sugarcane farming value chain.
Prof. Gbadebo Olaoye, the National President of STSN, remarked that the conference is focused on fostering collaboration to improve sugarcane production, aiming for self-sufficiency for domestic use and potential export. He stressed the importance of strengthening international relations to ensure adherence to global best practices within the sugarcane subsector. Olaoye also mentioned the society’s commitment to investing in research, using its outcomes to boost production and improve the income of sugarcane farmers.
Dr Muhammad Indagi-Ishaq, the keynote speaker, encouraged stakeholders in the sector to address challenges and work towards increasing sugar production. His speech, themed ‘Renewed Hope of Boosting Sugarcane Value Chain from Farm to Factory for Sustainable Industrial Development’, outlined the challenges facing sugarcane farming and production in Nigeria and urged collective action to overcome them.
Prof. Usman Dakwes, Director of the Dangote Sugarcane Research Centre at FULafia, noted the timeliness of the conference, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to sugarcane research and development.
