FCTA Initiates Waste Collection Procurement in Satellite Towns

Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced the procurement process to award contracts for waste collection and evacuation in the satellite towns of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This development was announced by Mr. Abdulkadir Zulkifku, the Coordinator of the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), during a waste evacuation exercise in Karu, part of the Abuja Municipal Area Council.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Zulkifku revealed that the contracts held by previous waste management contractors expired in April. In the interim, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has instructed the STDD to clear existing dump sites while the procurement process for new contractors is underway. Zulkifku noted that the current waste evacuation is being managed directly by the STDD, without the involvement of external contractors.

He further stated that the ongoing waste removal activities would extend to Karshi, with plans to continue into other area councils thereafter. Zulkifku also mentioned that the STDD is considering relocating the waste collection point in Karu due to potential health risks to nearby residents. The current site, designated as a collection point, is continuously receiving waste, highlighting the need for a more spacious and suitable location.
