Abuja: Mr Iacopo Foti, the Acting Ambassador of Italy to Nigeria, has praised the strengthening bond between Italy and Nigeria in economic, cultural, and people-to-people relationships.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the envoy expressed his commendation during the 79th Italian National Day celebration held on Sunday night in Abuja. The ambassador expressed optimism that these relationships will lead to concrete actions and investments. He highlighted that Italy was not only celebrating its anniversary but also the friendship, cooperation, and shared aspirations that have linked the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1960.
Foti emphasized that Nigeria, a land of incredible diversity and dynamic energy, has become a second home for many Italians since the 1970s and 1980s. These Italians have contributed to the development of Nigeria in various sectors. He described Nigeria as a cultural powerhouse and a leader in Africa and globally in art, literature, and film. Italy, with its deep-rooted cultural legacy, is eager to expand its engagement with Africa, particularly with Nigeria.
The ambassador noted the mutual respect and understanding that form the foundation of the relationship between the two countries. He cited the increasing economic ties, growing cultural exchanges, shared passion for football, and the rising number of Nigerians who study and visit Italy every year. Likewise, the increasing number of Italians drawn to Nigeria’s rich culture and history was highlighted.
Foti also pointed out that both countries share a legacy in the movie industry and a deep sense of aesthetics. He acknowledged the shared societal values such as the central role of family and friends, and the historical context of being migrant societies with strong ties to their motherlands. He remarked that both Italy and Nigeria are sometimes victims of stereotypes and misperceptions which affect their global reputation, quoting Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie on the dangers of a “single story.”
The ambassador appreciated the Italian community for integrating into the Nigerian system by introducing Italian food products, marbles, stones, design, fashion, advanced technology, and know-how. Looking ahead, he expressed optimism about the future of Italy-Nigeria relations, emphasizing the potential for deeper economic partnerships and expanded cultural and academic exchanges.
Guests at the event were treated to savoury Italian cuisines and drinks, further showcasing the cultural ties between the two nations.
