Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), in partnership with Near Foundation, an NGO, has distributed meat to 150 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in celebration of Eid-el-Kabir. The beneficiaries were chosen from the Waru and Yimuthu IDP camps located in the nation’s capital.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Hajiya Fatima Ibrahim, Head of Relief and Rehabilitation at FEMD, stated during the distribution that each IDP received three kilograms of meat. The initiative aims to extend love and support to vulnerable individuals during the Sallah festivities. This annual gesture, facilitated by Near Foundation, underscores efforts to ensure inclusivity during the celebrations.
Ibrahim expressed gratitude to Near Foundation for its dedication to assisting the less privileged. She urged affluent Nigerians to replicate this benevolence and aid those in need. “We are doing this to show the IDPs that FEMD and Near Foundation love and care for them,” she said, encouraging others to follow suit.
Earlier, Mr. Aliyu Harande, Project Manager of Near Foundation, highlighted the importance of giving back to the community, especially during festive times. He emphasized that many people struggle to afford basic necessities like food and water. Harande called on Nigerians to extend compassion to those in need, noting that while the meat distribution is beneficial, it is not a long-term solution.
Ms. Leilatu Abubakar, an IDP from the Waru camp, expressed her gratitude towards FEMD and Near Foundation for their support. Similarly, Mrs. Christy Dauda appreciated the organizers’ efforts and urged other Nigerians to emulate their generosity. “I cannot remember the last time I ate meat but today I have meat and I thanked all those who provided it for us. May God bless them,” she said.
