Educationist Urges Federal Government to Implement Supportive Policies for Private Schools

Abuja: Ms Ramatu Aliyu, the Director of GEMSland Private School, Abuja, has called on the Federal Government to enact education policies that would create a supportive environment for private school owners. Aliyu made the appeal during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the school’s graduation ceremony for the class of 2025.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Aliyu emphasized the need for the government to support rather than hinder private education across the country. She highlighted the significance of education in shaping the future of Nigeria and urged the government to facilitate the growth of private schools to nurture innovative citizens equipped for future challenges.

Aliyu expressed concerns regarding the government’s role in education, criticizing the numerous agencies and the financial burden of overlapping taxes. She described these agencies as a “nightmare,” accusing them of prioritizing profit over educational development and threatening the closure of private schools. This policy of double taxation, she noted, has forced many private institutions to shut down.

During the ceremony, Aliyu underscored GEMSland’s mission to provide holistic education, focusing on moral values and fostering creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork among students. She celebrated the graduation not just as a milestone, but as a testament to the school’s vision and values, acknowledging the trust and support of parents in the educational journey.

The school’s head teacher, Mr Albert Chidozie, commended the students’ achievements, highlighting their success in competitions such as the Cowbell Mathematics Competition. He called for a shift towards child-centered learning in the education sector, urging the government to train teachers to nurture creativity and independence in students.

Mr Kazim Abdurazak, Chairman of the Parents, Teachers Association, expressed pride in the school’s impact on his son’s education, praising GEMSland’s commitment to academic excellence. Meanwhile, Mrs Hauwa Oniyangi, a guest at the event, encouraged graduates to embrace their individuality and learn from their mistakes.

The ceremony featured student presentations and awards for outstanding achievements, showcasing the school’s dedication to excellence and holistic development.
