ACCI Calls on Federal Government to Enhance Journalists’ Welfare and Security

Abuja: The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has called upon the Federal Government and other stakeholders to prioritize the welfare, security, and capacity development of journalists nationwide. Chief Emeka Obegolu, President of ACCI, emphasized this message in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Obegolu highlighted that efforts from the government, private sectors, and other stakeholders are essential for enabling journalists to perform their duties effectively and ethically. He underscored the importance of commitment to support the media, especially in an era marked by misinformation and technological disruptions. The ACCI President advocated for the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, ensuring it enhances rather than undermines press freedom.

Obegolu noted that the theme for the 2025 World Press Freedom Day, ‘Reporting in the Brave New World, The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,’ is both timely and thought-provoking. It calls for attention towards the rapidly evolving digital landscape where AI is reshaping the creation, consumption, and regulation of information. He emphasized the necessity of upholding ethical standards, ensuring truthfulness, and protecting press freedoms as AI influences the journalism profession.

The World Press Freedom Day serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by journalists globally, some of whom have paid the ultimate price in their pursuit of truth. Obegolu remarked that the ACCI joins the global community in celebrating this day, underscoring the vital role of a free, independent, and responsible press in advancing democratic societies, economic development, and good governance. He pledged ACCI’s continuous support for a free and safe press, acknowledging the unwavering support and partnership of the media over the years.

Obegolu emphasized the instrumental role of the press in amplifying the chamber’s voice, promoting advocacy for private sector development, and advancing the interests of the business community within and beyond the Federal Capital Territory. He noted that media coverage has significantly contributed to visibility, policy impact, and stakeholder engagement, reinforcing the press as a vital pillar in ACCI’s global movement.

Through accurate and balanced reportage, journalists create an informed business environment, encourage investment, and hold institutions accountable. Obegolu commended the courage, professionalism, and resilience of media practitioners, especially those reporting under challenging conditions. In commemorating this important day, ACCI reaffirms its commitment to supporting the press through strategic engagement, media partnerships, and advocacy for freedom of expression and access to information.

As the celebrations continue, media professionals are encouraged to remain steadfast in upholding professional ethics while embracing innovation and new technologies responsibly. Obegolu concluded that together, a press that is empowered, secure, and aligned with the aspirations of a just and prosperous society can be built.
