Abuja: No fewer than 1,000 athletes have arrived in Abuja for the 2025 African Karate Championship scheduled to hold between July 21 and July 28. Silas Agara, President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), told newsmen in Abuja on Sunday that 31 countries, alongside host Nigeria, would compete in four categories of the sport.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Agara detailed the categories, which include the cadet category for athletes aged 14 to 15, and the junior category for those aged 16 to 17. The senior and para karate categories will feature athletes aged 18 and above. Agara expressed satisfaction with the preparations, stating, “Today, we are happy to announce that we have most of the countries that have indicated to participate in the upcoming African Championship; they are on ground.”
Agara highlighted the efforts made by the federation to ensure smooth logistics and accommodation arrangements for the participating countries. He noted, “As at Wednesday night, which was the closing date for the registration, we have 31 countries that have indicated interest to come, with over 1,000 athletes from all these countries that will be coming along, including officials.”
Despite challenges related to accommodation, transportation, and immigration processes, Agara assured that preparations are on track. He also mentioned that the General Assembly of the African championship would be held in Abuja during this period.
Dave Jegede, Technical Director of the Federation, shared that Nigeria will present 60 athletes for the championships. He stated that the athletes are well-prepared and in high spirits, having participated in various national and regional championships. Jegede expressed confidence in the team’s potential, noting that many athletes are African champions and Commonwealth medalists, ready to make Nigeria proud.
