Ondo State Government Revives Children’s Parliament After 12-Year Hiatus

Akure: The Ondo State Government has announced plans to revive the Children’s Parliament, marking its return as a key feature of the 2025 Children’s Day celebration. The announcement was made by Dr. Seun Osamaye, the Special Adviser on Women Affairs and Social Development, during a news conference outlining the upcoming Children’s Day events.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Osamaye revealed that the resuscitation of the Children’s Parliament is part of a broader initiative to engage children in the workings of government. As part of the celebrations, children will visit the State House of Assembly to observe parliamentary proceedings and gain firsthand insight into legislative processes. The parliament, which has been inactive for over 12 years, is set to be revived with an inaugural session at the State House of Assembly.

In addition to reviving the Children’s Parliament, the state government has planned a series of competitions with significant monetary prizes to encourage participation. The best performing school will receive a prize of N500,000, with second and third place receiving N200,000 and N100,000 respectively. These initiatives are designed to promote the theme of this year’s celebration, “Love and Unity,” and aim to foster a sense of community and inclusiveness among the children.

Osamaye emphasized that the event will serve to recognize and engage with children across the state, focusing on primary and secondary school students. The celebrations will highlight government efforts to improve the lives of children and underscore ongoing commitments to their development and education.

The event will feature new innovations aimed at enhancing the intellectual engagement of children, aligning with Governor Aiyedatiwa’s agenda prioritizing children’s social welfare, development, and healthcare access. Osamaye noted that this year’s celebration will differ from past events by focusing on rewarding intellectual achievements and fostering knowledge growth among children.

A total of 2,500 pupils from 100 schools across Ondo State are expected to participate in the celebrations, marking a significant effort to involve a wide array of students in the festivities.
