Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Will Withstand Flood for 50 Years – FG

Lagos: The Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, assured that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, once completed, would withstand floods for approximately 50 years. Umahi provided this assurance during a stakeholder engagement concerning Section 2 of the highway project held on Sunday in Lagos. He emphasized the strategic elevation of the pavement level to counter potential impacts from climate change, stating it would be equivalent to the first floor of many buildings.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the construction will include retaining boards to bolster the road’s integrity. Additionally, the highway will feature cable ducts to prevent the need for road cutting by service providers like MTN and African Plus. Umahi highlighted the inclusion of closed-circuit television cameras along the highway, ensuring rapid response to any incidents within five minutes. The project will also incorporate an evacuation corridor, contributing to carbon credit earnings through the use of emission-free concrete pavement.

The highway will be landscaped with trees to enhance its appeal. Situated near the Dangote Refinery, the plan includes a 60-meter clearance for truck access, supported by a flyover with spans of 60 and 41.6 meters. The flyover will serve as a vantage point, potentially developing into a tourist attraction. Along the corridor, relief centers featuring supermarkets and medical facilities will be established, facilitated by state-allocated lands.

Umahi expressed gratitude to stakeholders and the contractor, Hitech Construction Company, for their commitment and timely execution of the project. He acknowledged the presence of attendees driven by a passion for the development, beyond financial incentives.
