FG Committed to Transforming Agriculture Sector for Economic Growth – VP Shettima

Ijaiye: Vice-President Kashim Shettima says the Federal Government is resolved to transform the country’s agriculture sector to stimulate economic growth and be a national pride. Shettima made this statement during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Oyo State Agribusiness Industrial Hub in Ijaiye, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Vice President was represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, at the event. The groundbreaking of the Agro-Industrial Hub, part of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) programme, marks a significant step in Nigeria’s pursuit of becoming resilient, self-sufficient, and prosperous. The SAPZ initiative is a key component of the Renewed Hope Agenda spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu, aimed at tapping into the country’s agricultural potential.

Shettima emphasized that the initiative is not merely an infrastructural project but a strategic move to transform Nigeria’s agricultural resources into value-added products. This project is the result of a partnership between the federal government, state governments, and international development partners, including the African Development Bank (AfDB), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB). The collaboration highlights the shared commitment to sustainable agricultural development through unity and innovation.

The vice-president further noted that the initiative lays the foundation for empowering agro-processors and farmers, stimulating local economies, and positioning Nigeria as a competitive player in global markets. The expansion of the SAPZ across all 36 states is planned in collaboration with the AfDB, with the initial rollout in 10 states by the first quarter of 2026, following financing agreements with partners.

Shettima also acknowledged the leadership of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, whose commitment to the state’s development made the event possible. He praised AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina for his leadership in the SAPZ initiative and its impact on Africa’s agricultural landscape, noting Adesina’s role in positioning Nigeria’s SAPZ as a flagship project.

Governor Makinde, in his address, stated that the Ijaiye Agro-Industrial Hub is the third established by his administration, highlighting the importance of agribusiness. Plans are in place to design three additional hubs, with designs to be handed over to the next administration.

AfDB President Adesina reported that the bank has invested $934 million in the development of SAPZs and mobilized $938 million across Africa. The initiative aims to reduce post-harvest losses, improve logistics, and strengthen the connection between farm production and value addition, ultimately transforming rural economies and creating jobs. He commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its support of the SAPZ programme in Nigeria.
