Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Thursday inspected the ongoing construction of some police stations, pledging its commitment to their timely completion.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the inspection of the projects was carried out by the Director of FCT Security Services Development, Adamu Gwary. Gwary, after conducting newsmen around the projects, reported that 11 out of the 12 police stations across the six area councils in the FCT were nearing completion. He explained that these projects were initiated following the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s town hall meeting with stakeholders in 2023, with construction commencing in September 2024 after receiving approval from the FCT Executive Committee.
Gwary highlighted that the initiative aims to enhance security for residents and address escalating issues such as kidnappings and other crimes. Each police station is planned to include officers’ quarters, comprising six two-bedroom flats to accommodate personnel. He emphasized that the new facilities would serve as a morale booster for FCT residents, particularly in rural areas, aligning with Wike’s vision to restore confidence in the security system.
He further stated that the presence of personnel in proximity would improve response times and the effective handling of situations. Currently, 11 out of the 12 police stations have achieved over 90 percent structural completion, with one station yet to begin construction. Fitting works are also advancing, with many stations nearly completing this phase, resulting in the projects being over 90 percent complete overall.
NAN reports that some of the sites visited included police stations in Bako and Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council, Yaba in Abaji Area Council, Ushafa in Bwari Area Council, and Saburi and Takushara in Abuja Municipal Area Council. At the Saburi site, a contractor, Ahmed Yahaya, expressed his commitment to completing the project within the stipulated time frame.
