Communications Ministry Urges Private Sector to Invest in Women-Led Tech

Abuja: The Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has called on the private sector to invest in women-led tech hubs and support workplace policies that empower women within society. The Minister, Dr. Bosun Tijani, made this appeal during a press conference on Friday in Abuja, marking the upcoming World Telecommunications and Information Society Day 2025 (WTISD-25) celebration on Saturday.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event is recognized globally by the Telecommunications Community every May 17. This year’s theme for WTISD-25 is ‘Gender Equality in Digital Transformation’. Dr. Tijani, represented by the ministry’s Director of National Frequency, Adeyemo Olugbenga, emphasized the need for private sector players to adopt gender-responsive practices. He pointed out that ensuring no one, particularly women and girls, is left behind is crucial, as the digital economy is not solely about infrastructure and innovation but fundamentally about people.

The Minister stressed the importance of breaking stereotypes and encouraging girls to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) from primary school to university. He noted that while Nigeria has achieved 46.2 percent broadband penetration, a significant percentage of Nigerian women lack smartphone ownership, which hinders their access to online services and economic opportunities.

He further urged civil society and media to amplify the stories of women overcoming barriers in tech and to hold stakeholders accountable for creating inclusive policies. He also called on men and boys to be allies in challenging biases and fostering a culture of equality in tech spaces. Dr. Tijani concluded by urging stakeholders to collaborate in building a future where gender equality is not merely an objective but a reality, highlighting that the digital revolution will only be transformative when it is inclusive.
