Abuja: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Eminent Stakeholders and Concerned Leaders have reaffirmed Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of the party. The stakeholders made this reaffirmation in a communique issued in Abuja following a closed-door meeting aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis affecting the party.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the stakeholders and concerned leaders who participated in the meeting were drawn from various states across the federation. Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, read the communique, emphasizing that Anyanwu’s reaffirmation was in accordance with the resolutions of the stakeholders and aligned with the Supreme Court’s judgment.
Wike stated that the meeting was convened to assess the party’s current state and the need to reinforce internal democracy, equity, and justice within the party’s ranks. He noted that the stakeholders identified the crisis within the party as stemming from a disregard for the party’s constitution by a few individuals.
Referring specifically to sections of the party’s constitution and the Supreme Court’s definitive judgment on the position of the national secretary, Wike expressed concern that the party was on a path to self-annihilation if urgent corrective measures were not implemented. He added that divisive tendencies within the party had been evident among certain interests at the National Executive Committee (NEC), National Working Committee (NWC), and Board of Trustees levels.
The minister emphasized that to prevent the party’s decline, the PDP must respect the Supreme Court’s judgment without delay. Wike reiterated the stakeholders’ commitment to the party and urged members to uphold the rule of law and respect constitutional mandates. He also called for resistance against efforts to destabilize the party and encouraged support for the National Reconciliation Committee led by Senator Bukola Saraki.
The stakeholders resolved that the party should unequivocally pronounce the zoning of its presidential candidate to the South in the 2027 elections, citing fairness, inclusion, and adherence to federal character principles after the years of leadership by former President Muhammadu Buhari from the north. The meeting included notable figures such as former governors Ifeanyi Uguanyi, Samuel Ortom, and Okezie Ikpeazu, as well as the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Philip Aduda. Former federal and state lawmakers, along with zonal and state party executives, also attended the meeting.
