North-East Governors to Implement Comprehensive Strategies Against Insurgency

Damaturu: The North East Governors’ Forum has resolved to adopt a multidimensional approach through both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to address the insecurity challenges in the region. The decision was announced in a nine-point communiqu© read by Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba at the conclusion of the forum’s 11th meeting in Damaturu.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the governors emphasized that addressing insecurity in the region must be accompanied by efforts to tackle youth unemployment, poor infrastructure, weak education systems, and widespread poverty-related issues. While they commended the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance national security, the governors also expressed concern over the resurgence of insurgent activities in certain parts of the region.

The forum urged the Armed Forces, other security agencies, and community leaders to reassess their strategies in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations. Additionally, the governors highlighted the deteriorating condition of federal roads in the region, noting that it exacerbates insecurity and hinders economic recovery. They called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the completion of abandoned federal road projects.

The governors pledged to strengthen collaboration in attracting investments in sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, climate adaptation, and vocational training. This initiative aims to create employment opportunities and reduce youth vulnerability to extremist ideologies. They also expressed appreciation for the efforts of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) and urged it to intensify stakeholder engagement and prioritize road and transport infrastructure projects.

Furthermore, the forum supported the expansion of the Nigerian Law School Yola Campus and resolved to assist with hostel accommodation, water supply, and other facilities. The governors also committed to supporting the National Commission for Al-Majiri and Out-of-School Children Education by providing offices in each state and adopting a unified regional strategy to reintegrate out-of-school children into formal and vocational learning systems.

The meeting was attended by the Governors of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe States, while Bauchi State was represented by the Deputy Governor. Chaired by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno, who also serves as the Chairman of the Forum, the forum announced that its 12th meeting will be held from July 27 to 29 in Jalingo, Taraba.
