Abuja: The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has praised the efforts of Voice of Nigeria (VON) for establishing a platform that encourages open dialogue and gathering feedback on the nation’s security challenges. During his speech at the 2025 VON Forum in Abuja, Idris emphasized the importance of patriotic journalism and the media’s role in promoting unity among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event, themed ‘Renewed Hope Agenda: Citizen Engagement and National Security,’ was organized by VON with support from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation. Idris highlighted that the forum serves as a collaborative space for harmonizing policy discussions with the voices of everyday Nigerians, aiming to reinforce national unity and resilience.
Idris acknowledged VON’s significant contributions under the leadership of its Director-General, Malam Jibrin Ndace, noting its longstanding role in amplifying Nigeria’s voice on the global stage. He pointed out VON’s efforts to expand its reach by broadcasting in Chinese and promoting Nigeria’s stories, values, and achievements internationally.
The Minister stressed the critical responsibility of journalists to report truthfully and responsibly, underscoring the media’s role in maintaining national cohesion. He cautioned against reporting that could lead to national fragmentation and chaos, urging media outlets to prioritize content that fosters unity.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, outlined his ministry’s goal to reach 15 million Nigerians through a conditional cash transfer program within a year. He commended security agencies for their support and urged the media to provide feedback on his ministry’s initiatives.
VON’s Director-General, Ndace, described the forum as a national platform focused on unity, governance, and citizen participation. He emphasized the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ as a call for Nigerians to contribute to a more secure and prosperous nation.
The event also featured remarks from Shehu Mohammed, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who noted the alignment of the forum’s theme with the UN’s road safety strategy. Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, commended VON for its efforts to engage Nigerians in nation-building.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the forum attracted dignitaries from various sectors, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, retired and serving Service Chiefs, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
