Abuja: The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has called for calm over the suspension of the operations of Badeggi FM, a radio station in Minna, Niger. This appeal was made through a statement by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, Malam Rabiu Ibrahim.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the suspension directive was issued by Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger during an expanded state APC caucus meeting in Minna on August 1. The governor cited allegations of unethical broadcasting and incitement by the station as reasons for the suspension.
While acknowledging the concerns raised by various stakeholders in the media industry, the minister emphasized that the suspension of broadcasting licenses is the responsibility of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), as outlined by law. He welcomed the decision by the Niger government to formally report the perceived unethical behavior by Badeggi FM to the NBC.
Idris urged all parties involved to remain calm and assured them that the NBC has the necessary mechanisms to address the issue in a fair and impartial manner.
