Birnin kebbi: Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi announced that the State Government has allocated N6.5 billion in the 2025 budget for the renovation of primary and secondary schools and the supply of furniture. He made this announcement at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) in Birnin Kebbi.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Governor Idris also revealed that his administration purchased books worth N2.7 billion, which will be distributed to students at no cost. He emphasized that Kebbi is operating a free education system to ensure that all residents have access to formal education. Additionally, he mentioned improvements in boarding school feeding programs to encourage students to remain in school.
The governor stated that his administration has adjusted medical doctors’ salaries to align with federal standards to combat brain drain in Nigeria’s health sector. In the agricultural sector, Idris reported the procurement and free distribution of 520 trucks of fertilizers to farmers, along with 10,000 tillers and solar-powered pumping machines to enhance dry season farming.
NUT President, Mr. Audu Titus-Amba, praised Governor Idris for his contributions to the union, particularly the extension of the service years for teachers from 60 to 65 years. He expressed gratitude for the governor’s role in elevating six teachers to the rank of Permanent Secretaries and described Kebbi as a supportive environment for educators.
Dr. Halima Bande, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, represented by Permanent Secretary Alhaji Abubakar Magaji-Na-Yelwa, lauded the governor for his substantial investment in education. She urged him to maintain this level of investment for the betterment of all children in Kebbi.
Acting Chairman of NUT in Kebbi, Alhaji Usman Koko, also commended the governor for his dedication to education and noted the significant achievements in his first two years in office. The NEC meeting, held in Kebbi, honored Governor Idris, who previously served as NUT State Chairman and National President before becoming governor.
