FG Endorses Arewa International Film Festival, Pledges Support

Abuja: The Federal Government has endorsed the Arewa International Film Festival (AIFF) and pledged its support to showcase the rich and historic beauty of Northern film, creative works, achievements, and opportunities. Mrs. Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, pledged FG’s support on Wednesday at the official unveiling of the film festival.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the festival is tagged ‘Showcasing untapped potential and promoting the rich historical heritage and storytelling of the Sahel region’. Musawa stated that the creative industry is the best platform to engage and promote Nigeria’s richness, history, and diverse heritage to the world. She emphasized the responsibility of Arewa stakeholders to take ownership and showcase what they have to offer Nigerians, instead of focusing on what Nigeria has not offered them.

The minister affirmed the government’s full support for the festival, highlighting its potential to empower the growing youth population in the region. Plans are underway to create a film village and other projects to enhance the industry. The Federal Government is working on developing film infrastructure like studios and film villages, ensuring Kannywood is integrated into this growth process. Musawa urged Arewa creatives to collaborate and tap into the creative industry’s potential, delivering impactful results that attract investment and sustain their craft.

Mr. Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigeria Film Corporation (NFC), noted the festival’s potential for the north to synergize with other regions and beyond, unveiling new talents, empowering actors, directors, producers, and cinematographers. The AIFF will address issues in the Arewa space, including capacity building, skills acquisition, networking, opportunities, partnerships, and sponsorships.

Ms. Rahama Sadau, Convener of the AIFF, described the festival as a cultural renaissance and youth empowerment movement, reclaiming the narrative of the Sahel creative industry. The festival will screen over 100 films, celebrate women in filmmaking, feature a royal durbar, award innovation, and spotlight emerging stars from the region. Sadau emphasized the AIFF’s goal to amplify Northern Nigeria’s creative and cultural expressions, celebrating its rich history, literature, and oral traditions.
