Criminal Case Against Fidelity Bank MD Discontinued to Uphold Justice and Fairness – AGF

Abuja: The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, announced the decision to discontinue the criminal charge against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc, emphasizing a commitment to justice and fairness. This decision underscores the AGF’s role in ensuring that legal proceedings align with the principles of justice.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the decision followed a thorough review of the case, which revealed no involvement of Onyeali-Ikpe in the alleged fraudulent scheme. It was determined that she was neither the account officer nor the Managing Director when the account in question was opened.

As the chief law officer, the AGF holds the constitutional authority to enter a nolle prosequi, effectively discontinuing a prosecution when necessary to prevent a miscarriage of justice. This decision was made to uphold the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law, reinforcing confidence that it serves the best interest of justice and the public.

The AGF clarified that this decision does not absolve Fidelity Bank of the allegations, which remain active in court. The move reflects the attorney general’s responsibility to ensure justice is appropriately served.

The AGF called on the public to let the legal process proceed without speculation, reiterating that all individuals found culpable will face the law’s full consequences to deter future misconduct.
