Abandoned Buildings in Abuja: FCTA Reminds Land Owners of 2-Year Ultimatum

Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has reiterated its two-year ultimatum to land owners, urging them to develop their allocated plots or risk losing them. This reminder was issued by Mr. Obinna Nkwocha, the overseeing Director of the Department of Monitoring and Inspection, during an inspection of abandoned buildings within Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the FCTA had recently implemented a land reform that emphasizes the necessity for land owners to utilize their plots within a two-year timeframe or face revocation of their land rights. During a routine monitoring exercise in areas such as Maitama, Central Area, and Jabi, Nkwocha highlighted the security risks associated with abandoned buildings, noting their potential use as hideouts for criminals.

Nkwocha advised developers to adhere to the two-year ultimatum outlined in their Building Plan Approval, emphasizing that neglected structures not only mar the city’s landscape but also pose significant safety hazards. He urged developers with the necessary approvals to resume construction promptly, citing issues like insufficient project costing and legal challenges as contributing factors to the prevalence of abandoned sites.

Furthermore, the director called on residents to report any abandoned buildings that could threaten community safety. He underlined the efforts of the Nyesom Wike-led FCT Administration in advancing infrastructure development in the territory and encouraged both residents and developers to support these initiatives.
